This is a simple little crochet hat you can stitch up in no time! Excellent for NICU charity gifts to keep those sweet baby heads warm!
Original post from: February 13, 2015
The finished hat is the perfect size for preemies or newborns. The ribbed style allows it to stretch to fit larger babies too. Crochet many of these in several colors!
Materials:
- H hook (I use a Clover Crochet Hook)
- Approximately 2oz. Of #4 worsted weight yarn (I use Red Heart Super Saver yarn)
Pattern:
CH 30 and HDC in the second chain from the hook.
R1 – HDC in each chain across. CH 2 and turn.
R2 – HDC in the back stitch only in each stitch across the row. CH 2 and turn.
R3 thru R23 – Repeat R2
R24 – HDC in the back stitch only for each stitch across the row. Do NOT tie off.

Free crochet pattern for a ribbed newborn or preemie hat.
Finishing
Fold the hat piece together and sew the two sides together with a SC stitch. (See video instructions). Tie off and weave in yarn ends.
To make the chain tie: CH 60 and tighten up the knots on each end. Weave the tie into the hat 5 stitches down from the top….. (See the video instructions). Tighten the chain tie and make a bow!
